520 |aLantern slide depicting the bombardment of Fort Moultrie which occurred during the Battle of Sullivans Island in June 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. Sir Henry Clinton, leading the British, landed 2,000 men on one of the islands ready for attack. The British fleet fired on the fort for ten hours but were forced back after heavy loss by the America forces commanded by Col. Thompson and General Charles Lee. The lantern slides were a gift of Mr. Frederic W. Thomas given to GSMT on May 25, 1928 and were used in a lecture on the American Revolution called 'One Flag. One Country, One People'. Slide number 21.
