-
Description

Black & white picture of the Boonville train wreck of July 4, 1908. The image captures the freight train's steam engine and accompanying coal car- derailed, wrecked and lying on the canal embankment. Additional freight cars lay derailed and stacked up, on the top of the canal embankment. Of note in the wreckage, is an early refrigeration car. Railroad personnel and passengers, men and women, dressed in holiday clothing of the period, stand around and atop the wreckage, observing the destruction. The dry canal bed is prominent in the foreground. In the distant background a carriage and team of horses can be seen on the crest of a ridge.
