Digital Culture of Metropolitan New York (DCMNY) provides online access to digital collections that document the history of the Metropolitan New York region. Many participating institutions are located in New York City and surrounding counties, but contributions are open for institutions from around the world. For more information about participating in DCMNY, please visit our DCMNY Membership page or contact us at repositorysupport@dcmny.org.
Through DCMNY, akin to a community garden, METRO endeavors to cultivate sustainable digital spacemaking and cultural heritage resource exchange, provide access to collections materials from a spectrum of diverse viewpoints, and support research activities for individuals seeking information and resources related to Metropolitan New York’s history and unique communities.
The collections include photographs, maps, letters, postcards, manuscripts, scrapbooks, programs from events, catalogues, memorabilia and ephemera, and more. New collections are being added on an ongoing basis, and contributors are also adding new material to existing collections. The distinctive stewardship styles and descriptive practices of each contributing institution are respected in DCMNY, moving towards our longer term goal of a more equitable mixture of perspectives in online digital culture heritage spaces.
DCMNY is not a curated repository. It is intended to serve as a hosting service for members of the Metropolitan New York Library Council to make their content available online in a collaborative, shared digital space. Please keep in mind that items in DCMNY typically represent only a small percentage of the materials held by the organizations that made them available online, and feel free to contact any of the contributing institutions for more information about their collections.
If your institution is a current DCMNY Contributor, please refer to our Contribution Guidelines for more information related to preparing your collection materials.
