Drawing of Coventry Waddell's Villa, Fifth Avenue and 38th Street, 1845. The idea of putting policemen in uniform was originated by James Gerard, who, at a fancy dress ball in this house, wore a costume that illustrated this. His idea was adopted with the uniforms similar to those worn today. Built: 1845; Razed: 1856; Architect: A.J. Davis. When completed, the villa's grounds boasted paths, gardens, and a wheat field.
